It’s Just a Matter of Choice

by Dr. Bobbie Stevens on October 24, 2011

Yesterday, coming home from a great day out, we stopped by the grocery store to buy our groceries for the week and ran into our neighbors, a great couple that we really enjoy.  As we were sharing stories about our summers, the man looked at our grocery cart and remarked about all the healthy food we were buying and how it so completely differed from what they had in their cart.

This started me thinking about why we make choices that we know are not in our best interest.  We are always making choices and all of our choices have consequences.  So why do most people not chose to take better care of themselves?  I think we simply get into habits and unless something causes us to stop and take a look at our choices, we simply keep making the same choices over and over.

Being a psychologist, I am very familiar with Abraham Maslow’s hierarchy of growth.  Maslow tells us that we grow through different levels when we are trying to fulfill our needs.  It starts with our need for food, shelter, clothing, etc.  Then our next pressing need is to “Belong”.  We need to feel a part of a larger group.  Most of us begin to feel this very strongly in our teens and as we grow up we continue to make choices according to what the people around us are doing.

As we are working on our education and then our careers, most of our friends and the people around us are doing the same, and we sometimes make choices that relate to what other successful people are doing.  Our society encourages us to work hard, to do more and more and also to socialize, play hard as well.  We start early pulling all nighters cramming for tests, then partying into the wee hours of the morning.  We deprive our bodies of the sleep they need to revitalize themselves.  When we begin to become over stressed we are encouraged to unwind with a few drinks and lots of junk food.  Everyone seems to be doing it, so it must be the way to success.  Therefore, we create a life style that is seldom questioned.

As the years go by and we get older the consequence of those choices shows up.  After a certain age, which is getting younger and younger, most people begin to experience malfunctioning in their minds and bodies, which turns into various illnesses.  Since this is what most people experience we just call it aging.  We think it is unavoidable.   This is not the case; it is just the results of the choices we have made.

It can all be prevented simply by making different choices.  However, in order to do that at some point one has to stop simply following the crowd.  They have to question whether the crowd is going in the direction they want their lives to go.  Instead of continuing their old habits they have to make some different choices, which, of course, will produce different results.  They are then said to be marching to a different drummer.  They have become strong enough to move into what Maslow calls “Autonomy “  which is the next step in our natural growth process.

Our neighbors have been very successful financially and are now enjoying traveling, but they have had physical challenges for several years now, and are preparing for more surgeries.

Will you keep making your choices from habit?  Or are you ready to find a better way?

Many years ago I realized that I did not want to go where the crowd was going.  I stopped to ask if there isn’t a better way, and fortunately found one.

I discovered a natural process for releasing stress and healing the damage it does to the entire mind and body.  And the exciting thing is that after the healing is done it also moves you into a much more advanced level of functioning.

It seems to reverse what we call the aging process, and you begin to experience higher and higher levels of health and well being.

I have described this process in detail and provided step-by-step guidelines for creating higher and higher levels of health and wellness in my book entitled Unlimited Futures: How to Understand the Life You Have and Create the Life You Want.

I have also created a CD, DVD and a Companion Workbook to help you get started working with the process.

In addition I created a course that is now on DVDs that leads you through this amazing growth process.  You can download a free introductory session of the course by simply clicking in the box on the side of this page requesting it.

We also provide courses that you can attend to accelerate this natural evolutionary process.
