Meditation

by Dr. Bobbie Stevens on May 16, 2011

Did you by chance see Dan Harris’ piece on meditation on the ABC evening news with Diane Sawyer?  He talked about all the benefits of meditation and they are numerous.  Much research has been done on meditation and they have found it plays a major role in all areas of physical health.  It helps to release stress and strengthen the nervous system thereby, making a major contribution to one’s psychological or emotional health.

They have found that 20 minutes of meditation gives a deeper rest than 8 hours of sleep.  It is something that should be a part of everyone’s lifestyle who wants to create a healthy, happy life.

On the program they gave a suggestion for how anyone can learn to meditate by simply pay attention to your breathing.

There are many ways to meditate, but first it is important to understand what meditation is and how it works.  The purpose of meditation is to quiet the mind and move your consciousness from the constant thoughts that run through your mind to a very settled place of peace and tranquility.  Through the on-going practice of meditation you can bring your conscious mind to the source of all of creation.  Here we find universal intelligence, or all intelligence, all knowledge.  Through this process we can begin to know who we are and the power we each have to create whatever we chose in our lives.

There are many ways to meditate and here are a few of them:

  • You can use any of your senses to focus your attention.  The idea is to focus your attention on one thing.  You can simply pick something pleasant to look at.  The idea is to stay focused on that point to the exclusion of other thoughts or feelings.
  • You may listen to music, classical music is best.  Again keep your attention focused on the music, and when your mind wonders onto something else, simply bring it back to focusing on the music.
  • There is mantra meditation where you are given a sound to focus your attention on.  In this case you simply start saying the word (mantra) and when you find yourself thinking some other thought you just bring it back to the mantra.
  • There is a sound deep within your ear that you can hear if you become very quiet.  It is said to be the sound of creation.  People describe it differently, some say it sounds like a seashell others like a ringing or a buzz.  Whatever it sounds like doesn’t matter.  The idea is to simply become quiet and still enough to hear it and keep your attention focused on it.  Again when your attention wonders bring it back.

What affects the mind affects the body and vice versa, and it helps in learning to meditate if you know how to settle your body down before going into meditation.

Many years ago I knew there had to be more to life than what I was experiencing so I started my search to understand how life works and the role we each play in creating our own experiences.

I started working with some yoga exercises, breathing exercises and meditation, which I practiced twice a day every day and my whole life changed.  My energy started increasing.  I started feeling younger and more confident.  My mind became very clear, and I soon started experiencing intuitive understanding.  I could see that there are laws of nature that governs how we all create our own experiences.  I knew that if I could work in harmony with these principles I could create whatever I wanted.

I begin to experiment and created a business, a new house for myself, with all the furnishing I wanted and a new car.

I realized that there are just principles that we can all work with to create whatever we want and it doesn’t matter what that is.  So I also created or attracted my ideal mate.  We have now been happily married over 30 years.

I also knew that my purpose in life was to understand this process and share it with others.  That is why my husband and I founded Unlimited Futures over 20 years ago.  This process has helped thousands of people create better lives for themselves.
