Relaxation plays a major role in creating a healthy body and mind and therefore in personal growth. Our abilities are determined by our level of health. We must start our personal growth process by creating optimal health for ourselves. For optimal health and functioning there must be a balance between rest and activity.
We are usually so aware of what all we need to get done that it is easy to forget that rest is the catalyst for giving us the energy and clarity necessary for accomplishing our goals. When we do not get enough rest, our energy diminishes and the mind is not as clear, therefore, we are just spinning our wheels in trying to get things done.
When we pay attention to our body, it gives us strong signals to alert us to the fact that it needs rest, but we can get so caught up in our activities that we are simply not aware of these messages. Most of us need about eight hours of sleep every night plus a balance between rest and activity during our waking hours. Recent research in sleep deprivation has uncovered the importance of getting enough sleep.
In order to have our bodies and minds function well, we need to create a lifestyle that automatically provides for a way to release stress and strengthen the entire mind/body system on a daily basis.
